  Fillets of Giant Squid

Scientific name: Dosidicus Gigas

International name: Giant Monterrey Squid ; Aka ika

Dosidicus gigas is an active predator in every state in their life cycle (Ehrhardt et al. 1983), and is known in Chile with the names of move or squid red. It is the mussel nectónico of greater size body and one of the most abundant Eastern Pacific, from where it is endemic (Schmiede & Acuña 1992,& Vásquez 1995, Clarke & Paliza 2000, Markaida & Sosa-2001 Nishizaki, Nigmatullin et al. 2001).

The importance fishing D. gigas in Chile has been irrelevant and irregular in the past 50 years (period since have official records of their catch), with an average annual national landing that does not exceed the 1,123 tons net (Fernández & Vásquez 1995, Rocha & Vega 2003, Sernapesca 2003). From the year 2004, however, this condition drastically changed, with a landing on the annual 416,000 tonnes net and whose fate, due to large volume and lack of market for direct human consumption, has been mainly reduction (Sernapesca 2004).

The limited studies on the power of D. gigas in Chile (Wilhelm 1954, Cubillos et al. 2004) indicate that possesses a broad spectrum trophic, and that their diet is dominated by fish and secondarily by mollusks (including the cannibalism) and crustaceans (Wilhelm 1954, Clarke & Paliza 2000, Nigmatullin et al. 2001, Markaida & Sosa-Nishizaki 2003, Cubillos et al. 2004), although there are exceptions (Sánchez 2003). Some authors consider that these cephalopods species are important in the structure of marine ecosystems pelagics (Markaida & Sosa-Nishizaki 2003). In this study is a description of the composition of the diet of squid red on the continental shelf of Chile centre-south. It intended to establish whether there are variations according to the status and sexual ontogenética, and compare results with those of other work in this species.
